Okay... annoyed that we didn't even get an Okay7 or something... whatever... lazy admins.... dry.gif

How would I define Liberal? I believe as a liberal that we can build a society and establish a government that encourages the best in people while hedging against the worst. I believe that just as we inhereited from the common past, we become obligated to invest in the common future. I believe that just as we strive to be good people, we strive as a people to be a good nation. I believe that we as humans have the basic right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, and the guarantee of this is the proper pursuit of the governments formed by the people. I believe in a commitment towards society will produce the foundation and security upon which individual citizens may then build a good life.

My, that's a bit fancy. But better than a string of I believe in public education, public utilities, the Centers for Disease Control, NASA, yadda yadda.....

CST,

I have an honest question. Why the republican party is not more fractured? It would seem to me that the fiscal conservatives would be very opposed to all of the gov't intervention and spending on the social part of the platform. It was my understanding that the regan republicans were far more libertarian in their outlook which is that gov't should stay out of a person's life as much as possible. Am I wrong about that? It is my impression that the current GOP looks very different than it did in the 1980s, but I am on the outside looking in and have to admit I wasn't paying that much attention in the 1980s. I was wondering what yours and other more conservative members thought.

I don't know of any Conservative that is happy about the way the Republicans in Congress spent to the moon. It was embarrassing to be bluntly honest. There's fractures for sure, over the spending issue, over immigration and border security, and Iraq. But I think in a way getting beat this time around was good from the standpoint of the Republicans that were dragging the party away from Conservative small-government ideals are going to be out. There has to be a major refocusing on what got us the majority back in 94, and what got us the last 2 Presidential elections. What's interesting is, no one candidate for the WH in 08 has every set of principles that Conservatives would fall in love with. McCain is pro-amnesty, Guliani is pro-abortion, Romney let his state's supreme court violate the separation of powers in forcing both the executive and legislative branches to make gay marriage legal in Mass when he could've stopped them, Newt is smart but has his personal past as an albatross. There's a lot of shaking out to do for sure.

Well, I agree with all that, and I'm not a liberal. I think we all have the same goals, generally speaking, just believe in different ways to get there.

Hmmm...

Liberals want equality for homosexuals, believe certain groups that suffered lots of discrimination need extra help to undo the damage such discrimination has done in the past, wants less money spent on the military (in general) and more on social programs, wants a big federal government taking care of every possible need of all the nation’s citizens, want to remove any aspect of religious tradition for the public sphere...

Not being a liberal, I'm not really the best one to be trying to do this.

Yeah, you're really not the best to try that. I love you, but.... really. huh.gif

Some of those are ah.... like from other people on this thread... "mischaracterizations."

So he's described what liberals do (in his opinion).

What are the underlying values that motivate liberals to do what he says they do?

I thank heavens every day for spell check. I have lots of talents, but that is not one of them. I apologize to the rest of the posters on the thread for all of my earlier errors. I am going to lurk and hope it is better tomorrow.
