While Spencerian was mopping over at the wiki, he stumbled upon the name of one of the battlestars hiding in plain sight in some of the paperwork Adama was reviewing. There are actually two battlestar names visible, but one is heavily obscured by walnut shells. The one that can be made out with a relative degree of certainty is Night Flight. The other one is obscured by bits of walnut shell. If somebody has a cleaner screencap (or one with less shell), we might be able to make out the other one. We initially were guessing at things ending in gus, until we realized that what we thought was a "g" might be partly made up of walnut debris... so we halted our speculation.

It might be possible to help narrow down the name by its length, as the first letter should start in the same place that "Night" did, so it should be correspondingly longer than that word (by two letters or so). I was hoping some intrepid analyst here might be able to discern the other one.

Spencerian went ahead and created a little article for his find on the wiki (though there's not much more than the name to go on). Please drop him (or myself) a line if you can figure out the other, or better yet, add it to the wiki yourself. The more, the merrier.

No but here's some trivia..

Serenity, the central ship from the TV series "Firefly" and the motion picture, "Serenity", appears briefly in the sky outside the window of a doctor's office where viewers first see Laura Roslin. The ship does not appear in the Fleet

That was likely Zoic's doing.

I like it! It fits the length...
Night
Pegasus
Two characters past "Night"... assuming a "typewriter-like" font.

I thought that was a "p" or a "g" at the end too... but it might be a speck of walnut shell.

We dropped a question to Brad Thompson about it, but it's been a while since he's last answered questions over there.

Hi, all. The text is like the Courier font, which means that it is fixed-width. The name must be precisely 7 characters based on the screen cap.

With that, the guesses thus far I like, "Pegasus" and "Olympus" aren't bad, but the "p" doesn't work; I'm sure that tail is debris. "Maximus" looks closer as I zoom in on the fifth letter and try to note the differences in color of the shells and ink.

This cap is slightly better, although not sure what caps you guys have got already

Heres the full size one and a negative image, too big to post in here:
*edit* plus photobucket doesn't let you upload anything bigger than 1024x768 so I had to crop them a bit because it was resizing them*

Watching the vid, that big piece of shell is over the beginning of the word the whole time unfortunately.

Thanks KC. Your reverse video shots were very helpful in filtering out the last four letters, "smus".

The first letter is the key. Because it's a straight back in what we can see, and given the font, it can only be letters that fit that. While "P" could work, it's not a really good grammatical fit. With the last letters and the 7-letter requirement, I think that the name is "Erasmus". It's an unusual name and there are few to no other English/germanic words that end in this "smus" lettering. There is a historical background, as well, which fits into the show's usual penchant for naming ships in that fashion. Thoughts, anyone?

From the pics above, I believe that the 4 last letters are "SMUS" also it seems that the first letter is one that has a vertical line on the left side with a horizontal line on the bottom. Letters such as B, D, E, L, fit that description..

In greek ERASMUS means "beloved."

So, am I the winner?

If we are lucky in fandom to find two battlestar names in one week, we're all winners!

Let's give others a shot, especially others who might have some other literary insight on what words could come from "smus."

Interesting. Erasmus would fit. Wasn't that the name of John Blackthorne's ship in Shogun?

Nice capping, KillCally. That impostor hanger off the letter m was a bit of shell.

Courier. B,D,E,F,H,I,K,L,M,N,P,R - ??smus. Agreed. Congratulations.

Unless its an unknown Colonial-ese proper name, the word is Erasmus. That's the only straightbacked capitaled, seven letter word ending in smus in the OneAcross dictionary. The Shogun connection further nails it.

Battlestar Lockjaw (Trismus) just doesn't have a ring to it biggrin.gif

Spencerian,

This is design/print/typography trivia, but face like Courier where all the letters occupy the same width of space are called "mono-spaced" typefaces. Depending on who you talk to at a Kinkos, they might or might not know that. Any print shop or graphic designer would for sure however.

There, that's your word for the day. Don't you feel smarter? smile.gif
