He doesn't claim to be able to read minds (in the general sense, he makes all sorts of false claims to the subjects of his exercises.) Only some of his segments are filmed in New York, and others are not introduced as taking place in New York. Understanding what actually does happen in this show requires great attention to detail. Other threads offer some useful discussion. In the mean time, absorbing the words said in narration could also prove most helpful toward the pursuit of understanding.

I saw Derrwn Brown in Manchester here in the UK about three months ago. He's as real as they come. He didnt for one minute try and be anything but upfront about basically tricking the entire audience. But everyone bought it.
In fact even before the show started he gave the whole gig away.
Let me explain.
A big video screen came on with a message saying to watch carefully and count the number of times you saw a pingpong ball cross a net. A video came on and two guys one balck one white and both dressed all in black started playing ping pong. everyone watched and counted. everyone got somewhere about 50-60 times. then the video was played back and we were directed to watch the guy on the left. about half way through the guy moved away from the table and was replaced by another guy in a gorilla costume.
pretty much nobody had spotted. the point was we followed instructions and were misdirected away from the point of the exercise.
when the show started properly he told us he'd do it again. he explained at some point a gorilla would come on stage at take an item he'd placed on the stage. and we wouldnt notice. he showed us the thing and where it was.
It happened. We didnt.
and then he did it again later but twisted it so that when the misdirection happened he dived off the stage and got in the gorilla costume himself.
okay, so its probably simple stuff but as just throwaway parts of a stunning two hour live show in which probably about 100 different things happened its a fair testament to his skill of misdirection while a bunch of mindbending stuff was happening right in front of a few thousand people.

His talent is real because I know how he does it, I just didn't master it.

omg your so stupid, there is no "real" or "fake".
If you watch the show he does not claim to have powers or read minds. He uses mental techniques, illusion, and suggestion to do is various tricks. Look up NLP or subconscious suggestion.
Most of this show is CLIPS from his shows in ENGLAND.

He's for real. My girlfriend was in one of his tricks.
And as others have already said, its not about real magic or fake ****. He tells us that its something anyone can do if they train the mind and are smart enough.

Nothing is far fetched, it's all done the way he says he does them.
