This tutorial is still under construction but I decided this was a good time to show off what I have so far.

Whovians be prepared! This is a crash coarse in the Gallifreyan language! You may find it a bit much which is why I am putting this thread up now so you can practice before the next fan-fic comes up (a lot of Gallifreyan words are spoken in it).

You lot might know a few words of Gallifreyan, but I have cultivated some more. I’m giving the Gallifreyans a true voice – a true language, just like they did with the Klingons and the Vulcans in ‘Star Trek’ (Please do not get confused between Vulcan and Gallifreyan. They look somewhat similar but they are not the same – take note of that!)

Anyway, this tutorial starts with basic word phases – share, learn and enjoy!

Intro:

The Gallifreyan language comes in three forms: Lower, Middle and Upper Dialect. In this tutorial, you will be learning the lower dialect, the most commonly used form of the language. If you ever run into a Gallifreyan in the street (which is not likely) you must know how to communicate with them other then just by mental telepathy. The Gallifreyan language is ancient and correct pronunciation is vital.

Phases:

Here are some basic multi-word phases. Sometimes, a single phase will be used instead of a line or words in order to communicate and speak (saves time). Sometimes, a Gallifreyan will mix a phase within a line of words to save time in speaking the words in another way. Also, there is more then one version of a single word - note that as you read through this...

For example:

English: “She is a lady of questionable memory!”

Gallifreyan: “Hui si’K ai yiue vara’Vorat!”

Other phases include as follows:

Of darkest thought – Gjara’Vont

You are an animal! – Hei’Mase Senda

I spit fire at you! – Invelan Flayara

You are mindless and insane! – Nanoi’Envae’Dosh

Fear me! – Krva’Styg

I am a king! – Kantan’Dialaen

GET HIM!! – Rrraassk’Skar!

Are you ready? – Muda’Melaen

Here we go – Delae’Shoun

The darkness inside – Niat’Nuom

To sing and dance – Nakina’Eusa

My soul is burning with rage! – Natea’Sanan’Tanant

I will live forever! – Ohn’Relue

I curse you! – Malphian’Tach

I walk in eternity! - Thia’Lyliet

Tis the season – Rae’Voel

I was born into sunlight - Rashae’Yer

A faraway place – Salaene’Klaelan

A walker of the night – Shantet’Naquet

Of questionable memory – Vara’Vorat

A lady of beauty – Vrayda’Eupaet

It’s Alright! – Ni’si Sop’Aet

Pan’Trivas Tagiria’N Tas! (I'm not going to tell you what this means!) biggrin.gif

Slangs:

Many slangs include a few already known as follows:

Nitach’Anthach – A word that is spoken after a battle cry. The meaning of the slang is unclear.

Grumlie(s) – A children’s slang to describe adults.

Pre-Ja Vu – The sense that you are going to have been somewhere before.

Da Gallifreyan – Has the same meaning as ‘You Rock’ or ‘That’s Cool’

Single words:

Since the complete list is still under construction, I can only give you a few words to tie you over until the completed list is finished.

Caka – Alien

A’Ienae – Ascend

Deineh – Descend

Misebeylde – Dusk

Miseardae – Dawn

Flayari – Fire

Dialae – Fight

Krvas – Fear

Habris – Herb

Meim’Idne – Human

Liary – Library

Kuila/Kui'La - Love

Meyopapa - Master

Meyomelae - Mistress

Nakaih – Thirst

Pu'Dae – Up

Mye’Seo - Goodbye

Na’Qae - Greetings

Numi Tiar - Hello

Nemiar - Thank you

Naka – Silence

Since this tutorial is still under construction, a complete list of English translated Gallifreyan words will be submitted later. If you wish to contribute to this list of Gallifreyan words, give me the words and I will put them in the database (someone give me some good Gallifreyan words and what they mean).

Can't Gallifeyians just speak english? They do in the show. Let's pretend they're evolved humans that invented time travel and went to the beginning of time and couldn't get back, Okay?

Let’s have some fun with a little translating shall we?

Gallifreyan:

“Nu’Miar Meim’Idne Meyomela’E. Nanoi’Envae’Dosh! Muda’Melaen Nakina’Eusa?”

English Translated:

"Hello human mistress! You are mindless and insane! Are you ready to sing and dance?”

Ha! LOL! That's cool!! I translated the Gallifreyan language…biggrin.gif

But still, the Gallifreyan language is a little tricky - It takes time to figure out how to speak it...

being called mindless and insane is music to your ears?
There are worlds out there where the sky is burning, and the sea is asleep, and the rivers dream. People made of smoke and cities made of song. Somewhere there's danger, somewhere there's injustice, somewhere else the tea's getting cold. Come on, Ace; we've got work to do!

Hey, I don't care. At least I am being spoken to in my native language, being a Time Lady and all...

They don't always speak English - note that. Actually, you only hear English in the series because the Tardis is translating for you. Watching the series is like traveling around in the Tardis with the Doctor. Your in the Tardis and the Tardis translates for you - that's why you always hear English instead of the native language as I've written here.

But you should always know some Gallifreyan - just in case you run into a Gallifreyan or a Time Lord...biggrin.gif

Do they? Or does the TARDIS just translate it into English, so that's what we hear? smile.gif

Yep, that's about the size of it, but that doesn't mean they can't speak English, it's just that 85% of the time it is their native language that is spoken, at least on Gallifrey... Anyway, does anyone want to add some new Gallifreyan words to my database? I like language building...biggrin.gif

I'm not currently near any TARDISes, so I'm pretty sure they speak english with a British accent. And anyway, if they were translating, they'd sound American.

If there were any TARDISes around, I'd be in one by now.

Yikes!! That one is a little hard to translate...biggrin.gif

Anyway, I’ve got a couple more Gallifreyan words for you lot:

Siliraegu - flying or flight

Uy'Juit – Mate

If you lot are a little cloudy on the language structure, I shall explain a small, small bit about the structure:

The way Gallifreyan words are written doesn't necessarily mean they are all pronounced as they are written. Some parts of the words can be silent, while other parts can be visually non-existent.

Examples as follows:

1. The word Krvas, the Gallifreyan word for ‘fear’ is pronounced: Ker-vas-sas. ‘sas’ is the Gallifreyan pronunciation for the letter ‘S’ in Gallifreyan.

2. It’s the same for the word Melae, the Gallifreyan word for ‘her’ or ‘she’, pronounced: May-la-ell. ‘Ell’ is the Gallifreyan pronunciation for the letter ‘E’ in Gallifreyan.

3. However some Gallifreyan words are pronounced as they are spelled, like the word Habris, the Gallifreyan word for ‘herb’, is pronounced: Ha-bris.

4. The word T’Ia, the Gallifreyan word for ‘In’, is pronounced: Tann-in-ain. ‘Tann’ is the Gallifreyan pronunciation for the letter ‘T’ – ‘in’ in the Gallifreyan pronunciation for the letter ‘I’ and ‘ain’ is the Gallifreyan pronunciation for the letter ‘A’.

5. The word Ipaae, the Gallifreyan word for ‘hear’, is pronounced: Ein-paa-ell. As mentioned in the above, the letter ‘E’ is pronounced in Gallifreyan as ‘ell’ as so on.

6. The word Mada’Iet, the Gallifreyan word for ‘are’, is pronounced: Mae-dae-in-ell-tann, pronounced longer then it is actually written, as some of the Gallifreyan words are.

The letters in the alphabet are spoken differently in the Gallifreyan language. The letter ‘Y’ in Gallifreyan is pronounced ‘yi’ and the letter ‘B’ is pronounced ‘nain’ in Gallifreyan.

Letters pronounced in Gallifreyan so far listed:

S – sas
E – ell
T – tann
I – in
A – ain
Y – yi
N – san
B – nain
R – ir (threw this one in)

7. Unlike in Earth English, where the letter ‘E’ is most used, the letters ‘I’, ‘N’ and ‘A’ are used the most in the Gallifreyan language, especially the letter ‘N’. So it is not surprising that most Gallifreyan words will either begin or end with an ‘N’, an ‘A’ or an ‘I’.

8. However most Gallifreyan words look different from each other – reason being is to distinguish between the words. It is the same for the multi-words and the phases. For example: The word ‘Flayari’ (pronounced: flay-are-ree) the Gallifreyan word for ‘fire’, will be distinguished from the Gallifreyan word for ‘flame’, which is the word Fluien (pronounced: flue–e-an).

Any questions so far? biggrin.gif
