Blindsided

*ringring*

"Gah....."

*ringring*

"What the...."

*ringring*

"......"

*CRUNCH*

Before Noir had a chance to curse, he grabbed the semi-crushed form of his phone, and held it to his ear. "This had better be good....do you know what time it is?"

"Wake up. We need to get moving quick. Hydro and I are en route to get you."

Noir stole a glance at his clock. 2:35 in the morning...oh Blind J was going to pay dearly for this. "....why?"

There was a shuffling noise as Blind Justice handed the phone off to Hydro. The water weaver juggled the wheel and the phone as he manuvered.
"We've got a hostage situation we've been called in on....Noir...its at the chemical plant."

By now, Noir was up, and getting dressed, kicking off his sleepwear and tugging on his trousers. "Haveshem Industreies? What the heck...?"

"Fifteen Minutes and we'll be there."

The phone line went dead, and Noir pulled on his coustume, and adjusted the brim of his hat. "This is gonna be fun..." He grumped.
--------
True to Hydros word, his car pulled into the drive, and Blind Justice slid into the back seat. She was hurriedly pulling her hair back into a ponytail, while Hydro took a drink from his camel back. Noir climbed in, and scarcely had a chance to close the door before their leader began tearing down the Parkway. It was still early, so the road was near deserted.

"Alright guys...you got me roughed up...got me up, got me dressed. Whats happening?" Noir questioned.

While Hydro paused in mid yawn, Blind Justice filled him in. "We got a call from the night manager, he said that theres some guy holding the managers son hostage!"

Noir nearly choked on his coffee, and grabbed the dash as Hydro flew past a toll. "Didn't we put him in jail?!"

"We did. He got bail...apparently some Eco Terrorists are looking to get revenge for that lake dumping incident." Hydro explained.

The car skidded to a stop roughly twenty feet from the gate to the building and the heroes and heroine piled out. Blind Justice unsheathed her cane, as Noir and Hydro spoke with the guard, and were allowed in.

The scene was that of semi-controlled chaos. Police cars lights assauleted Noirs filmatic vision, the loud noises of the radio created distorted images for Blind Justice, and the smell of the acidity from the chemicals hung heavy in the humid air. Hydro experimentally pulled some of the water from the air, maniplulating it easily and raising it to eye level. It was a muddy brown color, and the smell was nauseating.

"Its run off...probably from inside...the barrels might've been tipped over from the struggle." He determined.

The three heros put on brave faces as the police parted to let them enter the building. Blind Justice shivered a bit as they entered the silent building, the temperature was lowered, and their breaths came out in frosty puffs in the air.

"Alright...stick together...don't wander...the last thing we need is someone getting killed."

*click*

The sound of a gun hammer clicking was like a pebble dropped into a pool for Hydro and Blind J, both whirled as Hydro snapped up his water whip, ready to lash out.

Infront of them stood a man, dressed in only jeans and a teeshirt. Sunglasses sheilded his eyes, and he was as pale as death. "Get out of here." He murmered, and pointed the pistol at the trio.

"This man..." he gestured behind him, and the struggling form of James Havashem, could be seen. He was roughened, bloody and covered in mud. His suit was ripped in places, and he was tied to a concrete pillar. Two other men could be seen beside the pillars.

"This man is the reason nearly all of that life in the lake is now dead!" the kidnapper raved. "But...this will change....this whole building..." he grinned. "This whole building is rigged with chemical bombs..all lovingly crafted by me..." He patted his pocket, and a small rectangular box could be seen through the denim. "All I need to is push this one little button...."

He reached down to his belt, and Hydro reacted quickly.
He snapped the water whip, and knocked the first pistol out of his hand.

Noir took the insentive to charge the man, head butting him in the stomache while Blind Justice hurried to untie Havashem. She dragged her fingers along the heavy ropes, and found she was unable to locate a knot.

"Its wire core!" Haveshem groaned. "You'll never cut through it!"

Blind Justice, beneath her blind fold, rolled her eyes. "You dont remember me that well...do you?" She pressed her palm against the ropes, and a burning sensation wafted through the air, as the rope burned, smoldered and fell to peices, along with Havashem.

"Now get out of here!" She exclaimed.

The man grabbed her by her Obi, and shook her. "Theres still the workers in the second floors! They have no idea whats going on!"

Blind Justices brows shot up, her jaw dropping. "Hydro!" She exclaimed. "Theres workers on the second floor and the basement!"

The water warrior gasped, and finally landed the promising uppercut to the bombers jaw. As he sank to the floor, he landed on the remote.

The first round of explosions rocked the building. Bright lights, blasts of heat and vibrations knocked the group to the ground. Noir grunted as he stood his ground, clocking the two remaining thugs heads together. He tossed the trio out the front doors, and Haveshem ran out after them.

"Come on! We need to get the rest of the workers out!" Hydro bellowed over the noise. The second round rocked the building again, and they clung to the pillars in the lobby.

"Havashem said there were workers in the basement too! I'm going to check!" Blind Justice called out.

Before either of the men could say different, the blind heroine was sliding down the stairwells handrail, a cold trail of frost left in her wake.
Noir went to chase her, but his ears picked up the sounds of screams from the second floor. "The kid can handle herself, come on Hydro!"
------
It was silent in the basement, the bombs hadn't yet hit the lower levels yet. Her footsteps echoed across the cold floors, as finally, she picked up the sound of whimpers. Following the noise, she located an over turned desk, and a young woman handcuffed to the bottom.

"Easy ma'am....just relax...I'm here to help...."

The woman raised her head, her panicked gaze relaxing at the side of the kimono-clad heroine. "Oh thank God!" She jerked her arm, the clanking of the handcuffs creating a faint, fuzzy image for Blind J. "Its bolted to the floor!"

Once again, the blind woman knelt, and trailed her fingertip over the metal. The silver acid bit and ate away at the cold restraints, and the she helped the woman to stand. "Now come on, lets get out of here."

The woman shook her head. "Theres another bomb down here! I dont know when its going to go off!"

As if on cue, a small beeping noise rose to their ears, and the woman gave a small scream. "Please get me out of here!"

Relying on memory, Blind Justice led the woman to the stairwell. "Just go right up here and the police will escort you out!"

The heroine turned, and began searching for the bomb.
------------
The heat that radiated from the second floor nearly brought Hydro to his knees, but as Noir shoulder slammed the swollen door, he pressed himself against the wall beside it. Grabbing a quick drink, he focosued on getting the civillans to saftey.

They were huddled together, and the ceiling had begun to collapse. As a large chunk came down, Noir bolted, letting the burnt ceiling tiles bounce off his back. He grunted, the scent of burnt flesh filling the air, as Hydro created a watery net, his hands weaving it around the embers, dousing them and moving them away.

The employees bolted for the door, and Hydro checked on Noir. He was burnt badly on his back, his trench coat burned through, exposing the sizzled flesh beneath. He paused to catch his breath, and lowered his head. "Theres people in the next room!"

He gathered his bearings, and charged, plowing his way through the heat-weakened wall, and exposing the next round of civillans to be rescued. Blood trailed down cut on his face, and Hydro was having a rough time keeping up.

There was a beeping noise that caught his ears...and made the heavy hitter look around. It wasn't on this floor...it was too far down...muffled...

"Oh ****..."

Hydro escorted the last out as they headed for the lobby. Blind Justice was not among those being led out. The beeping was ringing in Noirs ears, as Hydro looked around for their partner.

"Shes still in the basement!"

The two bolted for the stairs, only to be knocked back by a massive explosions that shot up the staircase, a peircing scream intermingled amongst it.
-----------
*Three Minuets Prior*
Blind Justice followed the beeping, untill her leg bumped up against what appeared and felt like a large metal canister. She knelt, and ran her fingers over the top, and came across a cluster of wires. She arched her brows. The more intellegent part of her told her to go and get Hydro and Noir. Someone sighted would be able to determine the proper wire to cut...

Its always the third wire in the movies... her mind argued.

But the gut feeling told her there would not be enough time. She carefully counted, said a prayer and melted the third wire. The peeping paused for a moment, and then her world exploded. Heat blasted her in the face, blowing her back against the ajacent wall as the chemicals that made the bomb slammed her in the face. She let out a peircing scream, as a segement of the concrete pillar pinned her leg down to the floor, and her world dissolved.
---------
As the dust settled from the floor collapsing, Noir and Hydro charged down the near-destroyed staircase, both men calling out her name untill their voices were hoarse.

"Noir! I've found her!"

The heavy hitter charged, and located where Hydro was kneeling amongst the rubble. His hands cradled Blind Justices head, holding her neck stable, a large chunk of concrete pinning her left leg down.

"Help me get this off of her!"

The heavy hitter grunted, and shoulder slammed the pillar, rolling it off her. Blind Justice made a small noise, and Hydro carefully removed her blindfold, summoning a bit of water from his camel back, gently cleaning the dirt and dust from her eyes.

"Hydro...?"

He gently patted her cheek as Noir lifted her into his arms. Blood trickled from the burns on his back, as they existed the building, the police and paramedics swooping down on the three injured heros like vultures.
While Noir was led off to the burn squad, Hydro remained with Blind Justice, sitting beside her in the ambulance. She lightly squeezed his hand, as the paremedics began tending to the burns and cuts she'd recieved.

"Hydro...somethings....somethings not right..."

He frowned, and turned her head to face him. "Open your eyes Blind J...."

As questioned, she did, and the formerly dead seeming brown orbs looked around for a moment. Hydro noticed something that he'd never seen before. The pupils were expanding and contracting with the light...she was rubbing her eyes...as if...the light hurt them...

His breath caught in his chest, as Blind Justice gaped.

"I see you."

Yep...two chapters in one night!

Chapter 2

Hydro gaped as Blind Justice hesitantly reached out to touch his shoulder, but stopped half way. She turned, and stared at her own hand, turning it this way and that, examining it from all angles. She turned back to Hydro, and gently poked him, her roughened hands patting and prodding, as if she was making sure he was there.

Despite her injures, she sat up, wincing as she looked down at herself, examining her soot covered kimono, the inside of the ambulance, remanining silent all the while. She could hear voices out side the cab, and she slid off the stretcher, only to have her knees give out as she tried to stand.

"Woah there....easy...." A paramedic and Hydro both lifted her back onto the stretcher. She remained silent, twisting her head this way and that, touching various things she came into contact with.

Hydro lifted his gaze to the paremedic, who continued to dress the formerly blind womans wounds. "Whats wrong with her...? What happened?"

The paramedic shook his head, and removed the roll of gauze from Blind Justices hands. "She might be in shock...has she been blind her whole life?"

Hydro nodded, cocking a brow. "Yeah...come to think of it...yeah she has been."

The paramedic tied off a bandage, and nodded. "Well...shes never seen colors...textures...stuff like that...shes in shock..." He lifted a small tool to examine her eyes, and shone a bright light in them to examine her pupils.

The effect was almost instant. She shreiked in pain, and kicked the paramedic in the abdomen. She reared back a hand and clawed him in the face, the other pressed up against her wounded eyes. She jumped down on him, silvery beads of acid beginning to gather on her palm. Hydro pounced on his partner, pinning her down.

"Blind Justice whats WRONG with you!?"

"That hurts! It burns!"

The paramedic had gotten his second wind, and hastilly tucked the tool back into his belt. "Light sensitivity...her pupils have never been used....keep her eyes covered untill you can get her some where shaded..."

At this point in time, Noir had made his way to the ambulance, to find that his partners were both well on their way to the car, Hydro leading Blind Justice, whom the latter was sporting her usual blindfold...but something was amiss...
Her normal flowing movements were gone, and her expression was pained. She hit her head on her way into the car, and as Hydro aided a beaten Noir in, he sighed.

"We've got a problem John."

"What?"

"I'll tell you when we get to her place."

Noir arched a brow, it was rare for them to associate eachother by their civillian names unless it was serious. Hydro started the engine, and they headed back to Blind Justices apartment.
-------
The car pulled into the drive, it was mid morning and all three heros were sore, hungry and hurt. Once again, Hydro aided the heroine out of the car, fished her keys from her belt, and opened the door. Blind Justice left for her bedroom. Noir followed silently into the house, taking note that Hydro was pulling the shades, closing the curtains and making the house as dimly lit as possible.

"Alright Hydro. You've baited me and I'm biting. Whats wrong?"

His leader sat down heavally in a chair, cradling his head in his hands. "That chemical bomb...it...it did something to her...something to her eyes..."
He gave a weary sigh, and pinched the bridge of his nose.

Noir arched a brow, and removed his hat and tattered trenchcoat, wincing as he did so. "And?"

"John...she can see."

The other man gaped, nearly dropping his hat as he sat down. "What...?"

The hydrokenetic nodded, and walked over to the fridge, pulling out two bottles of water, and tossed one to his partner. "She sees...but her eyes are light sensitive...she attacked a paramedic for shining a light in her eyes."

Noir opened his mouth to say something, when a small noise behind him made him turn around. Blind Justice stood in her civillan clothes, watching the two men with widened eyes. Her face was burned slightly from the chemicals, but none the less, still looked like her. With careful movements, she hesitantly reached out and touched Noirs head, cheek, and shoulder, and moved to sit on a chair across the table.

She wrung her hands, and chewed on her lip. "I suppose...I'll need to change my name..."

Hydro shook his head. "No. Your going to be on light activity untill we can figure out how to tame that light sensitivity. Night patrols only. I dont want you out of your element."

There was a tense silence at the table, the three contemplating their next words. Blind Justice opened her mouth, closed it, and sighed. "I'm sorry."

The other two looked at her, and Noir cocked his head. "Why? What've you got to be sorry for?"

The woman slumped against the table, then stood, and began to pace. "I've always been a target...ALWAYS....with The Collector...on Patrol....just like with that gunman when we first met, Noir....I've always been preyed on because I'm blind...and now...I can see...but I'm useless!"

She paused, and grappled at the counter for support. She swayed for a moment, and Noir grabbed her by the wrist. Her knees buckled and she fainted, her figure going limp as she sank down against him.

"This is bad Hydro..." he grumbled. He carried her to the couch, and lay her down upon it. "We can't leave her alone...she's never seen what the world looks like..."

Their leader nodded, and crossed the room, and sat in a chair. "I suppose we'll just have to sit with her. Untill she can adapt. I suggest you run home though and get a change of clothes. Then I'll do the same."

The heavy hitter looked at the two for a moment, before taking Hydros keys and heading out to the vehicle. As he closed the door behind him, Hydro leant back in the sofa, closing his eyes.

A little shut eye might help....
----------
Despite the fact she'd been blind her entire life...her hearing had always painted a fairly acceptable picture for her. Where things were, how big or small, to a degree. She'd never seen colors, or textures, depths or percision. To her, it was a world of darkness in a huge sea of noise that made her world.

But now...even in that breif flash when she'd first opened her eyes in the ambulance, her mind was on the run. She wanted to retreat back into the world of cool darkness and shadows, where there wasn't any burning pains, and her head didn't throb.

In her sleepy state, her mind drifted to all of the heros and heroines and civillans she'd come across. She'd never seen any of their faces, but knew them by touch, voice, or smell. It was always easy to determine who had been where, and when, or who was talking to her. She gave a small, half cry, before squeezing her eyes shut. She still had her hearing...and it was just easier to forget she had this horrible accident happen.

But as soon as her eyes open, she could actually see her living room for the first time since getting this apartment. Hydro was slouched down in the recliner, dead to the world. A television in a dark wood entertainment center was across from her, the couch itself a dark shade of green, the carpet a deep brown. Oak coffee tables and side tables were scattered around the room, plants and braille books stacked neatly atop them.

She looked around again, remaining on the sofa. She didn't dare walk, not knowing weather her legs could support her weight yet. A key clicked in the door lock, and she squeezed her eyes shut, feighing sleep. She could tell by the heavy foot falls, that Noir had returned.

He paused, and sighed. "Both of 'em...out like lights..."

He walked to the linen closet, and removed a blanket, covering Blind Justice, and another for Hydro. "Looks like its gonna be a while..."

His voice was a low rumble, as Blind Justice felt drowsy again. She felt his hand lightly touch her head, as he walked to sit in the other recliner in the couch. It squeaked beneath him, but it was only a matter of time before all three heros were sound aleep again.

Since Blind J is still waylaid and unable to get on... for her I give you:

Chapter 3

Noir's vision was hazy when he awoke to the sounds of pots and pans clattering painfully loud in the kitchen. There was someone quietly mumbling in a forigen language. His brain didn't register that Blind Justice wasn't on the couch untill he got up, and walked into the kitchen.

The woman was still dressed in her civillan clothes, now wrinkled tee shirt and jeans, mussed with sleep, and she was covered in a plethora of burns, soot, and a powdery white substance. She wasn't aware of his presence untill he stood beside her for the better part of a minute, and she whirled, brandishing a teflon spatula.

"Oh...Noir...its you..." she blinked, her eyes crossing for a moment to narrow in on his face, and she turned to her work. Noir looked over her shoulder, to see what she was 'cooking'. In a frying pan, was a mixture of eggs, what looked like pancake mix, burned bacon and curdled milk. The scents assaulted his sensitive nose, and he took a step back.

"Blind J....dear...what the HELL are you doing?" He rumbled. "Trying to burn the house down?"

As if on cue, a dish towel that had been left next to the burner promptly burst into flames. Blind Justice shreiked, and promply grabbed the frying pan to smack out the flames, only to have the contents catch ablaze. The oil in the pan burst alive, and Noir grabbed her before her shirt sleeves could catch on fire.

From behind them, a hand parted the two and covered the blaze in the leftover pancake batter, leaving the floor a burned and white coated mess.

"Mind telling me whos trying to alert the fire department?" A voice rasped.

Hydro held the Bisquick box at eye level for a moment, tucked it back onto its shelf, and eyed the mess around the kitchen.

"What the heck happened?"

Both men turned to their younger member, who scuffed her shoes on the linoleum floor, before bending over to pick up the pan to pour the contents in the garbage.
"I tried to cook..." she mumbled.

Noir reached out to grab her arm, examining it between a thumb and forefinger. His grasp was rougher then intended, causing a voice of protest to arise. Several spatter burns were on both her arms, and a few on her face.

"Yeah...hey Kiddo...I'm gonna reccomend that you dont do that anytime soon. Ok?"

Blind Justice looked her partners over for a moment, before stalking off to her room, closing her door. Any noises that came from beyond that point were muffled, and Noirs hearing could only pick up bits and peices.

Hydro sighed, and pressed a palm to his forhead. "This is gonna be rough..."

Noir grunted, and began cleaning up the mess. "Your telling me. We've gone from Heros to Baby sitting duty..." He eyed a semi-melted carton of eggs. With a grunt of discust, he tossed it into the trash. "We didn't sign up for this."

Hydro looked over to his partner, drawing water from the tap to clean up the mess on the floor. "We're not baby sitters John. Shes our partner...and she's been hurt...."

Noir turned to his leader, and eyed him up. "I wish you'd stop calling me that. And shes not just our partner. Shes a KID. A twenty year old KID who got in over her head. And now, shes gone and gotten herself blown up in the face, gotten some crazy chemical bomb explode in her eyes, and somethings gone weird enough that the blind are seeing!"

Hydro turned and pointed a finger at Noir. "Now just listen Noir...Shes prooved herself time and time again for us...and herself...shes not a kid!"

"Tell that to her parents!"

"...My parents aren't around. They wont be for a while."

The unexpected voice behind the two arguing men caught them both off guard. Blind Justice stood behind the two of them, now wearing a long sleeved sweat shirt. She appeared uneasy, and kept pulling at her hair.

"Look...if you didn't think I could handle hero work Noir...why did you and I take care of that gunman? Or...or why did I help take down The Collector?" Her voice was becomming cracked and strained with emotion as her eyes began filling up with tears. "You just dont get it alright?" She tugged on her hair a bit harder, and began pacing.

"All my life I've been blind...I've never had to deal with seeing what people look like...I've cooked, but cooking blind and cooking sighted are two different things..."

She would've continued her ranting, had Noir not charged at her, and bodily picked her up and slammed her into the wall.

He lowered his head untill he was nose to nose with her, his filmatic vision skipping with his rage. His hands dug into her forearms, as he frowned down at her. "Now you listen hear missy....you've got no idea how good you've got it now...you've got EVERYTHING."

He slammed her back into the wall so hard the drywall cracked, and she screamed, her knees raising up to knee at his chest and stomache, his deadened nerves barely feeling anything. He could feel Hydro shaking his arms and punching him to put her down, but the blood was pounding in his ears.

"You were born blind, try waking up one morning and realizing that you couldn't have human contact. I can't feel anything. Not the wind, not the rain, I couldn't even feel you when I touched your hair." He shook her violently, his voice raising in chrechendo. "You think you've got it so hard? Your life is only going to get better from here! You can feel when someone touches your hand, you wont EVER have to worry about touching something and worrying that your going to shatter it!"

Finally, instinct kicked in, and Blind Justice felt a tingling build up in her throat, and she spit onto Noirs face, a silvery substance glittering in the light. For a moment, there was no noise in the room, before Noir grappled at his face, a hissing noise arising up.

He dropped his partner, who made a hasty retreat to her room, slamming and locking the door. Noir strode to the sink, to wash the acid from his face, cursing the whole time.

Hydro stood by the hall, watching the reactions of his teammates, and sat down at the table. Something caught his eye, something on the wall...a glimmer of something that wasnt wet paint....
He strode over to the sink and grabbed Noirs hand. His eyes widened at the sight.

"John..." His voice caught in his throat, and he released the limb as if it were a poisonous snake.

Both the heros hands were stained with blood.
