I'm curious to see what shows other anime fans would like to see re-made as live action films (not series at this point). I have a few at the top of my mind, direct translations as well as re-imaginings. Some of these are already in development at certain studios, some of these I've seen scripts or pitches for at comic-con etc., and some have just appealed to me on a such a deep level that I'd personally remake them if I had the talent or resources to do so. I'm also very curious to see which names I've left off this list that you guys would like to see.

I'm also curious to see if certain consistencies within studios has generated any measure of loyalty for repeat viewers. What I mean by that is because you liked Eureka 7 and Fooly Cooly would then consider other anime made by Gainax

notes - I'm aware there is a live action version of Skull Man already airing in Japan, the question is an abstract that isn't related to the current production. Akira and Robotech also have live action versions due out in the near future, and it's hard to imagine anyone who is a sci-fi anime fan not being excited about those two. Golgo 13 would naturally be on this list if there weren't already 2 live action movies with another in production at the moment. It just seemed like overkill. My list of studios is kind of bare being those were the only ones I could think of off the top of my head. I apologize for not researching it first.

The life of the Hikikomori is quite epicurean when one thinks about it

Yeah, wow odd to see how many are picking ghost in the Shell. But I would pay to see it... as long as the Major was proper Japanese and not a 10 million american actress. ten it would be Sh*t

I put it in there because it's all part of the same universe as the Cyborg 009 / Skull Man

Also, it started as a Manga =)

Aside from that, I'm really encouraged to see how many people think that GitS would make a good cross-over.

Ahh.. I didn't know that. I knew a Kamen Rider popped up in the Skull Man manga, but didn't know there was a seperate Kamen Rider series. Now I'm back to wishing Ishinomori's manga was more easily available in the US. Argh!

And yep Rob! Kamen Rider's a long running live action tokusatsu in Japan. It was created by Ishinomori, who also created the Super Sentai franchise (Power Rangers in the US), Cyborg 009, Skull Man, Kikaider, and more. There's actually a US version of a Kamen Rider series set to debut later this year, looks good from the trailer..

Kamen Rider: Dragon Knight trailer

I think it's a remake/adaption of Kamen Rider: Ryuki.

I really really REALLY want to see Gunslinger Girl as a live action movie, if only to watch the conservatives freak out! I've already got it cast in my head. Too bad Joe Flannigan can't pass as tom feltons younger brother....

And Ghost in the Shell would be great. What you you think, Mila Jovavich as the major??

Part one of your post QueenE, Aces agreed!

part two. Oh lordy please no. Mila looks nothing like the major, is not Japanese, and I believe does not bring the credibility needed, she might even turn it too cartoonish. I know your probably thinking her being a kick *** person in a few movies, but I think they should really stay close to a name not known here. If it is to happen...

like the winner of the Japan equivalent of the Academy Awards for female lead for the twilight samurai, Miyazawa Rie. She is the thief in the trailer here---> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R4YAaVT0nVM...feature=related also the lady in this that plays the demon queen looks like the Major.

Or if your going to not go Asian the actress in this clip from Day Watch. This woman looks a lot like her.
Feisty, tough, forgive the dub; it is Russian.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V8iYh5w-6JI She has powers in this, watch what she does with her car.
Anyhow Mila has roles I like of hers (Fifth Element) but if she was cast I would not be able to watch.

You're right funk, I guess I was going on body type and general demeanor. I do like Mila though, she's much better than Angelina (who doesn't exist to me) in the action genre.

It's tricky adapting Japanese movies to live action, because so often the characters don't look Japanese at all. Take death note for example. All the characters look Italian or something, and you watch the live action and you're like "What?".

So is it possible to have a japanese-made movie with mostly american/european actors? That might work.

And as for Gunslinger Girl, I've already cast Henrietta.

Rhiannon Leigh Wryn, from The Last Mimzy. Just look at that face!!! She gets points for her hard-core name too.

Gawd, I would have so much fun making that film!!!

Eveie

I would imagine Gunslinger girl would almost look better with a European cast.

Director Eve. It works.

Ghost in the Shell

Tenchi Muyo: I would love to see a live action Ryoko/Ayeka cat fight. laugh.gif

Cowboy Bebop: Really likable characters and storylines. Vicious was a cool villian.

OutLaw Star: Same as Bebop. Plus the Outlaw Star itself.

Clearly some Anime shows would translate over to Live-Action better then others. However the current capabilities of CGI being merged with Live-Action is eliminating many of the roadblocks to bringing Anime to Live-Action.

That doesn't mean that they'll be successful. Just Look at Speed Racer. It was a great movie. BUT, It sure did not rack in the box office bucks. sad.gif

What do you think?

I did not go see SpeedI did not hear great reviews for it. I know I should have, just because I bet a lot would be lost off of the big screen. Visuals = importance.
I suppose you would have to regulate a budget a lot.
A Deathnote movie for instance made loads of money in Japan. But the budget was in accordance. Speed, cost waaaaay to much. Also many other movies were out that overshadowed that one, like a very well done Iron Man, and a not too shabby Indiana Jones.

Anyhow, I imagine it would be better to update something more relevant than a 60's anime. That may have been stretching creditability.

First off, I was re-reading my original post and realized that I said Eureka 7 was made by Gainax, but I really think it's made by Bones. That's what I get for making 5 am posts.

Also, I didn't put this in my poll originally, but I think a RECORD OF LODOSS WAR movie could kick *** if the dungeons and dragons brand isn't screwed by their last attempt at a movie. Thanks people for participating in my little poll here, it's valuable information for me even if it is only a sampling of about 10 people =)

It would, but unfortunately it would be looked upon as just a way to cash in on the still rather recent Lord of teh Rings, and Now the Narnia movies. Maybe as long as enough time had gone by that it was looked at as fresh.
But Yes...
I would agree, if someone made a live action of that I would see it. I loved Record of the Lodoss war (the original 13 ep OAV especially)

You know, I actually think FMA would make a good movie. I can imagine the cool special effects for the alchemy, it would not be cheap.
GITS would be pretty interesting, but it would have to be a very high budget movie as well. Finding the right cast would be extremely important.

That's the problem with making live action, doing them justice and still somehow making money is a difficult task. There are too many things that can go horribly wrong. If you go big budget, then odds are they are going to want big name actors for drawing power too, which isn't really a good thing. You just know they would want to cast Angelina Jolie. But if you go cheaper, then you start getting b grade effects. It's a tricky balance.

Well there is something to be said for GITS it might be mixed up as another Aeon Flux that was made live action, or Ultraviolet. Or about a dozen other flicks that have come out reciently with a tough chick, doing extra-ordinary things ( Doomsday, Resident Evil movies)
Now don't get me wrong I would have no problem with it, helI I have seen them all, but it might be lost in a case of overload. Then again Hollywood loves excess (10 comic movies coming out in 2 years)

However you mention FMS. I do not think there is another story like it out there for live action. All the names are already English. It's cast would be young too. Maybe that Kid that played harry Potter? (nah he might already be too old for Edward) Anyhow, I agree that might just be an interesting enough story to see live.

I think you might have a bit of a hard time condensing the story, but maybe not as much as some others we mentioned.

for FMA you'd need a cast of nobodies, i think. actually, it would be hard to make it a series but only scifi could/would do it (b/c of subject matter and the fact that it started as an anime). they tried to make witch hunter robin live, the deal fell through is the only reason scifi didnt
