Splinter is actually an excellent horror film. It was released by Magnet Releasing, a subsidiary of Magnolia Pictures. So in other words, SCI FI has nothing to do with the film.

It's a creepy little film and pretty good, IMHO.

Here's the trailer for the film.

Well, I am watching it and aside from the gore, and the distracting fact that the premise is reminiscent of another saturday feature from a year ago, and of the thing, its kinda silly. Its like the hand from the adam's family got itself an attitude.

Splinter is still light years removed from anything SCI FI usually foists on its audience on Saturday nights, i.e. those awful grade Z filmed-in-Romania original movies with CGI that looks like it was made on a Commodore 64.

And funny they call it a "SCI FI ORIGINAL MOVIE" and it is not.

I bet it first showed up on fear.net first just like some of the other "SCI FI ORIGINAL MOVIE" movies

I think the claim of "scifi original" has more to do with who owns the right to broadcast the film then with who actually made it. They seem to buy up movies from a few different places which, if you watch the movies, have distinct styles and looks. Splinter bears an uncanny resemblance to "living hell" which was the one I was thinking of last night. They are a little more original and a little better directed and acted the most of the "original" films, but oscar material they are not.

That's exactly correct. Sci-Fi isn't a studio, and doesn't have a backlot where it films things. "Original" just means they bought the right to call something that. Things like George and the Dragon (re-titled Dragon Sword) and Ring of the Nibelung (retitled Dark Kingdom: The Dragon King) had been out in Europe for several years. And things like Minotaur, Highlander: endgame, Dog Soldiers and Marvel's Man-Thing were all originally intended for big-screen releases, and eventually got sold to Sci-Fi instead. 100% of their films and tv shows are actually done by independent producers, although some have input from the network from day one, while others just sell the finished product to them after the fact.

Actually most of the reviews on the thread you posted were positive.

I enjoyed it, but found the ending rather anti-climactic. This thing didn't seem nearly as dangerous as we were lead to beleive, and there was no heightened threat that this thing could exetend rapidly beoynd the gas station. But still, Far, Far better fare than most things Skiffy airs on Starurday nights.

At least it didn't have a giant snake or mutant cat as the villain. The killer plant was somewhat original. And if you've ever had a splinter, you know those things hurt like hell so I can see why it was kinda scary. The "thing" hand was pretty funny, but the dead body slamming itself against the convenience store window and the amputation scene were both pretty intense. The one thing I didn't like about the movie was that the carjacker suddenly become a hero. After escaping from jail, was he really going to stop and visit the widow of the guy he killed on his way to Mexico? That was more unrealistic than the killer plant.
