For those who are unaware back in 2007 Nicolas Cage was the executive producer of a TV series based on a best selling Urban Fantasy book series called The Dresden Files. Despite a large fan following that show was canceled after just twelve episodes.

The Dresden Files was about a contemporary wizard living in modern day Chicago by the same of Harry Dresden whom in the novel changes is even called Ragged Wizard for his shabby, unkept, unshaven appearance.

Nicolas Cage's fondness for The Occult and love of comic books as well as his fondness of The Dresden Files were relatively well known.

Roughly around the time of The Dresden Files TV series' 'non-renewal' Nicolas Cage signed on to be both star and executive producer for a new Disney film called Sorcerer's Apprentice. Many people mistakenly believe the film is based on the famous Mickey mouse short from Fantasia. It's not. The Mickey mouse short as well as one scene in the film are both based on an eighteenth century poem by Goethe (author of Faust). Goethe even gets credit in the Sorcerer's Apprentice film credits.

The majority of Sorcerer's Apprentice, including the physical appearance of Balthazar Blake (Nicolas Cage's character) are based upon Harry Dresden of The Dresden Files. Here is a side by side comparison for those who doubt me.

Nice find, HauntedbyBob.

Syfy's Harry Dresden was a decently well-done show. I was terribly disappointed when it was cancelled,
Looks like Nicholas Cage has taken the Dresden style; let's hope it has the substance also...

WHile I agree that Cage obviously took inspiration from Dresden for the character's look! The story is completely different! This will not be an unofficial Dresden Files movie!
I love being EVIL! Evil makes me feel good! Evil is as Evil does! What do you call an ill tempered beetle? An Evil Weevil!

I already looked into it. He's a thousand year old sorcerer looking for the 'next Merlin.' How much you want to bet the big twist is Balthazar Blake is Merlin himself?

Okay, now they're not even trying to pretend they aren't borrowing visuals from Dresden Files.

This

Compared to this.

Notice how they use the same back drop, the same power in the hand, and even same blue lighting.

And this

There's also one of the villain poking the top of his cane at the apprentice's chest in the same way Justin Morningway did to Malcolm in The Dresden Files TV series but that one could have been pure coincidence.

I know Balthazar Blake might be viewed as a rip off of Harry Dresden but he so kicks ***.

I liked all the Sorcerer's Apprentice clips so far except for this 'comic' explaining the back story. The narration is cheesy. It sounds like a knock off of the scifi channel website Soul Pool Dresden Files game that was up on the site back in 2007.

I look forward to this film mainly because it reminds me of the Dresden Files! <_< That and I think Nic Cage is a pretty decent actor.

Same here and I agree about Nic Cage except for in his remake of The Wicker Man but since he gave us the Dresden Files I can forgive it.
