I just happened to see a few episodes of Haven last fall and loved it, so I decided to start watching it from the beginning. In the audio commentary for the first DVD, the writers talk about the level of "darkness" in the show. I haven't seen all the episodes, of course, but I'm okay with striking a balance between serious things and humor. One of the writers mentioned how hard it it to balance the concerns of everyone watching the show. I for one don't like gory shows. In fact, if things get too dark, I stop watching. The beautiful scenery is the show helps to balance the events, I think. Thoughts?

I love it too. In the first season DVD commentary, the writers talk about the degree of "darkness." I know it's a matter of taste; I'm on the the more sensitive side of the scale. The show is truly wonderful.
